Comparing Israel's first king and Jesus our King (1 Samuel 8-15)

  1. In the book of Judges we read that there was no king in Israel. And the book of Ruth was all about God preserving a faithful remnant in idolatrous Israel, from whom a king would one day come. How do the following verses add to the expectation that there will be a king over Israel?
    • Genesis 17:6
    • Genesis 49:10
    • Deuteronomy 17:14-20
  2. Read 1 Samuel 8:1-22. 
    • What two motivations do the Israelites have for wanting a king?
    • In what ways is the characteristic of Samuel's sons shadowed in the Jewish leadership during the time of Jesus? (You may want to start with Matthew 22:29.)
    • How does the people's cry for a king resonate with the desire of the people in the time of Jesus?
