Week 6: David Persecuted by Saul
The anointed king (1 Samuel: 18-24)
Things to consider:- Compare the exchange between Johnathan and Saul in 1 Samuel 18:1-4 and John the Baptist with Jesus in Matthew 3:13-15
- Examine the reversal in roles for the two Sauls of the Bible: 1 Samuel 19:11-17 and Acts 9:23-28.
- Note that David's wisdom is demonstrated in his prowess against physical enemies (1 Samuel 18:30) while Jesus demonstrates his wisdom through his understanding of the law.
- Observe Johnathan's defense of David's innocence to his father (1 Samuel 20:31-34) and Pilate's defense of Jesus's innocence to the crowd (Matthew 27:22-24).
- Compare and contrast David's behavior in Gath (1Samuel 21:10-15) and Jesus's behavior in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 29:39-53)
Now it's your turn, there are many more shadows and similarities between David's time in the wilderness before he becomes King of the Jews and Jesus's time before he is also crowned King of the Jews. Can you find them? What is God telling you through these reflections and what are you being called to do about it?
