Week 4: Saul (Continued)

Comparing Israel's first king and Jesus our King (1 Samuel 8-15)

During last week's discussion, we used the story of Israel's first king to focus our attention on the type of king/leader/savior that we seek and the type of king/leader/savior God desires for us. For this coming week, we will allow our discussion to be informed by the actions of Saul and how these actions are mirrored or countered in the story of Jesus and in the story of our own time and lives. Throughout the week, contemplate 1 Samuel 9-15 and consider the following questions.

  1. Read 1 Samuel 9:19-21 and 1 Samuel 10:3-11.  Compare Saul's lineage with the people's reception of him.
  2. Read 1 Samuel 10:17-27.
    • What about Saul made an impression on the people when they found him hiding with the baggage?
    • What similarities and differences exist between the people's reaction to Saul and the people's reaction to Jesus?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 13:1-14
    • Consider Saul's actions and their consequences.
